Lovely time at the Latino-American Festival in downtown Ottawa -- a festival which unites Mexico, Central and South America... and also the Caribbean. Great example of real multiculturalism.

I went to the African-American History Museum in the Beacon Hill section of downtown Boston. There is an exhibit called "Africans in India". I did not know that India imported African architects to design their gradiose edifices, some still standing 500 years later. A fascinating exhibit worth seeing!

I went to a funeral and a young child told me she knew me from somewhere. I told her she must be mistaken. We kept on chatting. Then the little girl tells me the timber of my voice is familiar to her. I'm puzzled. Then she remembered: I volunteered to speak at Ecole St-Genevieve approx. 5 years ago, to 2 classrooms of 3rd grade students, as part of Black History Month. I told the children of Black Canadian history makers, from Mathieu Dacosta (1604) to Michaelle Jean (2004). I also created a crossword puzzle which helped the kids learn new vocabulary covered in the session. Here we are, all these years later, and the child remembered me and my words. #Speechless

Sao Paolo has an Afro-Brazilian History Museum inside the Ibuapuera Park. I spent four hours inside. It shows the full range of the african influnce in Brazil. There is even a real slave ship on display. It's a journey worth making.

This year marks 60 years since Bromley Armstrong, Ruth Lor and others led the successful fight for civil rights in the country in the landmark Dresden case. I have yet to see any building, street or statue to salute these heroes. Perhaps we Canadians are too busy gawking at the Americans go recognise our own?

In Portuguese class, we are learning about a Council who defied the Nazis and granted visas to 30,000 fleeing Europeans, including Jews, to leave for South America. His name was Aristides de Sousa Mendes.

This year marks 75 years since the Supreme Court of Canada ruled on a landmark civil rights case. In 1936, Fred Christie of Montreal did a brave thing when he went to court after he was refused service on account of his race at the Montreal Forum. Years before the United Nations and the Human Rights Declaration, this man paved the way for many to come. I hope his courage will be recognized.
